My Top 5 Summer Makeup Tips
The shift in season brings longer days, warmer temps, and higher humidity. Which means, the only beauty product you should be laying on thick is sunscreen.
A few days ago, I asked those of you who follow my Instagram for blog topic suggestions. Many of you responded with beauty and makeup content. I seriously cannot tell you how much I love connecting with you all, and hearing your ideas— keep 'em coming!
Since I'm a native Floridian, I've learned a few hot-weather makeup tricks over the years— mainly through trial and error, and trust me, it hasn't all been pretty.
I constantly experiment with new products, and have recently discovered some wonderful beauty must-haves to keep your makeup feeling light and fresh.
Here are my top five summer makeup tips to help you look naturally beautiful yet put-together.
1. Go Light
In the summer, less is more when it comes to foundation. As a reporter, I often have to wear thicker on-camera makeup. However, when I'm off, I usually opt for something lighter, like a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. I love Beautycounter's Dew Skin. This tinted moisturizer provides sheer coverage with sun protection and a luminous glow.
What I love about this product is that it looks good, and is doing good. Black currant, peony flower root extract, and vitamin C reduce the appearance of age spots and brightens the skin, while sodium hyaluronate enhances smoothness. What more can a girl ask for?
A friend of mine introduced me to Beautycounter a few months ago, and I quickly became a huge fan of their products and overall mission. This company prides itself on transparency and meticulously screens ingredients for safety. You can rest assured that their products only include ingredients that are healthy for your skin.
2. Fight Shine With a Translucent Powder
Keeping makeup on through the humidity can be a challenge. That's where setting powder comes in to save the day.
You want a powder to combat shine, but one that won't feel heavy in the heat. Laura Mercier's Loose Setting Powder locks in makeup for long-lasting wear, without adding weight or texture. Translucent powders are universal so you don't have to worry about changing shades if you're building that summer tan.
3. Try a Nude Lip
Take the plunge and go nude— with your lip color that is. A nude lip is perfect for summer and right on trend. Some days, I opt for a nude gloss by itself. I'm pretty much obsessed with Grande Lips hydrating lip plumper in Toasted Apricot. It instantly leaves my lips looking fuller while hydrating dry areas.
For summer nights that call for a little more drama, try an ombre lip effect. The combination I've been using is M.A.C.'s lip pencil in Soar, topped with M.A.C.'s Really Me lipstick. Together, the colors will create a warm mauve with a satin finish. If you want to top the look with a gloss, I recommend something clear.
Application tip: First, line your lips with a lip pencil, pulling the pencil in slightly more toward the center of your lip. Leave room in the center of your lip for a lighter shade lipstick in the same color family. For longer staying power, apply your lipstick, blot with a tissue, dust a layer of translucent finishing powder over, then apply another layer of your lipstick.
4. Bronze It Up
I love wearing a bronzer with a slight shimmer and peach or pink undertones for that sun-kissed look. One of my all-time favorite bronzers is Benefit's Hoola bronzer-- it flatters any skin tone, and blends seamlessly. I usually brush it over the apples of my cheeks, across the bridge of my nose, and on my temples. Basically, cover the areas where the sun naturally hits your face. A makeup artist once gave me the idea to trace the number three on the side of my face with my bronzer brush— starting at the top of my temple, going in to hit the top of my cheekbone, and finishing along the jawline. Voila! You have an instant, and natural-looking glow.
5. Lengthen Your Lashes
If I was stranded on an island and could only have one makeup product, you better believe it would be mascara. Even on days that I go foundation-free, I like to give my lashes a boost with a few swipes of mascara. It opens my eyes, while still looking natural. I've been using Grande's primer and mascara duo over the past few months, and I couldn't be more impressed with the results.
Their primer conditions my lashes to prevent breakage, while the mascara lengthens and thickens with a peptide infused formula. I've noticed a visible difference in the overall appearance in my lashes since using this product. In fact, a few people have even asked if I had gotten lash extensions. The answer is no, and believe me, this primer and mascara is a lot less expensive.
