Long-lasting makeup tips: How to make makeup last all day

One of the most frequent questions I get is “how do you get your makeup to last so long?”

I finally have a routine down that offers long-lasting wear, but trust me— it has been a learning process. As a reporter, I’ve had to combat heat, humidity and rain while still attempting to look camera-ready (key word: attempt).

Many of you know I’m also a former pageant girl, which means I’ve learned a few makeup tricks for long-lasting wear. Through it all, I’ve put quite a few products to the test.

I’m always looking for new ways to keep my makeup fresh all day long and thankfully, I’ve discovered a few staples that I always keep in my makeup bag.

Here are my best tips to help you feel glam throughout the longest of days:

1. Exfoliate

In order to apply makeup smoothly, it is crucial to prep your skin. That starts with exfoliation. I exfoliate my skin two to three times a week to slough off bacteria, oil and dead skin cells. I recommend using Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare's 'Universal' peel. This two-step system includes two pads that you massage onto your face. If you’re consistent, the results are amazing. I always notice a difference in my skin's smoothness and brightness.

If you’re looking for a scrub, I love Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub— it feels and smells so good!

2. Prime

I can’t stress this one enough. Priming is key to long-lasting wear. I use a primer for my face, eyes and lashes. It may seem excessive, but it truly limits the need to re-apply— saving you time and frustration later in the day. I must admit, I’m guilty of skipping this step when I'm rushed for time. But I can also tell you that I end up seeing a difference hours later. Moral of the story is, if you want your makeup to last longer, you have to prime. I recommend Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer, Too Faced's Shadow Insurance, and Grande Cosmetics' Lash Primer.

An eye primer is particularly important to keep eye shadow from creasing and settling into fine lines.

3. Apply foundation with a Beautyblender

I don’t know how I survived without my Beautyblender. Sounds dramatic, but it really has been a game-changer in my makeup routine. It makes foundation application a breeze, and as the name suggests, helps to blend my concealer. Use your beauty blender to apply light layers of foundation to achieve a smooth, natural-looking complexion. In fact, layering all your makeup products to build the desired level of coverage is essential for creating a natural look. Whether it’s foundation, eye shadow, or lip gloss, never apply a heavy amount all at once.

4. Layer with translucent powders

Somehow translucent powder makes its way into every makeup post I write. It’s just that good. A lot of people shy away from powder because they don’t want to look cakey. I get it, but trust me— translucent powder will not have that effect. I recommend using a lightweight translucent powder to set your makeup. I love Laura Mercier’s setting powder because it does its job without ever feeling heavy. It creates a silky finish and doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles. A translucent powder will help to minimize shine and oil while creating an airbrushed effect. Yes please!

To hide dark circles, I apply Estee Lauder's Double Wear concealer and set with translucent powder.

I also use translucent powder to help increase the staying power of my lipstick. Apply your lipstick, blot with a tissue, dust a layer of translucent finishing powder over, then apply another layer of lipstick.

5. Create long-lasting lashes with water-proof mascara

Prevent smearing and smudging with a water-proof mascara. My top two are Too Faced's Better than Sex Waterproof Mascara and Lancome's Definicils Waterproof Mascara.

6. Keep brows in place with a gel

Use a long-wear brow gel or cream and set with loose powder. I love Benefit's Gimme Brow because it also helps my eyebrows appear fuller.

If gel just isn't your thing, I also love Lancome's Les Sourcils Definis Eyebrow Pencil. It helps to shape my eyebrows and its ultra thin tip can fill in the tiniest of gaps. Its waterproof formula allows for more than six hours of wear without any worry about smudging.

7. Get rosy cheeks with a cream and powder blush

Layering is a common thread in the post. I use cream blush first, then go over it with powder blush and bronzer. This will give you a glow that lasts!

8. Use a setting spray

Setting spray is a more recent addition to my beauty routine. A makeup artist recommended it to me, and I’m so grateful she did! I never thought a few mists could make such a difference, but they do. Using a setting spray should be the last step in your makeup routine. It will increase the staying power of your makeup while also softening the overall look.

It’s also great to use throughout the day to hydrate or add a glow to your complexion. Just make sure you hold the bottle 6-8 inches away from your face. I’ve made the mistake of spraying too close, and it saturated my face (#makeupfail).

I’ve tried a few different setting sprays, but my favorite has been Glamglow’s Glowsetter Makeup Setting Spray. It’s infused with the brand's TEAOXI complex, which contains green tea, white tea and red tea along with water and caffeine to rejuvenate the skin.

Do you have any long-lasting makeup tips? I’d love to hear! As always, thanks for reading.

xoxo,

Liv
