Tips for Finding a Flattering Swimsuit

black swimsuit, one piece, cut-out swimsuit, swimwear, floppy hat

Shopping for a swimsuit is no easy feat. I've had my share of trials and tribulations in the dressing room. The variety of swimwear trends and designs can be overwhelming. And when a style we love doesn't love us back, it's frustrating.

A few of y'all recently reached out to me about tips for finding the perfect suit. It's actually something I've been wanting to do since the start of summer, so here we go. I've compiled some of my best advice to help make swimsuit shopping a breeze for every shape.

I dove deep into the one-piece trend this summer so I included a one-piece style for every shape.

Shop my look:

  • If you have a shape like Cameron Diaz, tops or bottoms with ruffles add femininity and create the appearance of curves.

  • Play up your natural curves with monokinis and cut-out one pieces.

  • A top with straps (such as a halter top) helps to balance broad shoulders.

  • Higher-cut bottoms will lengthen legs.

Pear Shape:

  • Stick with solid colors like dark blue, purple and black on the bottom to slim the hips.

  • Choose a higher-cut suit to elongate the legs.

  • Opt for a plunging neckline or interesting top to draw the eye upward.

  • Avoid wearing a thick-banded bottom, they tend to widen hips.

  • Suits with designs on the side, like this suit from Nordstrom, will create a slimming effect.

  • Strategically placed cutouts and asymmetrical suits cinch the waist and show off your curves in all the right places. This Miracle Suit creates an hourglass silhouette with overlapping panels and mesh.

  • Consider a colorblock suit-- it will slim the hips in a stylish way.

  • High-waisted two-piece suits show off your shape while still giving you some coverage.

Small Bust

  • Triangle tops, prints and ruffles accentuate curves. An underwire top will also give added lift. Va-va-voom!

  • Bandeau tops don't offer as much support, but you can pull them off if you're smaller on top. Embrace the freedom of the bandeau!

  • Try a deep v-neck one-piece for a sexy silhouette.

Large Bust

  • Opt for a bra-style top with underwire for more support.

  • Higher back tops are also a good choice.
